Turmeric (curcuma) comes from countries with tropical climate. Its rhizomes are used for medicinal purposes. They are characterised by an intense yellow inside, strong smell and bitter-spicy taste.
Turmeric rhizomes are a source of yellow dyes – curcuminoids, including curcumin – a compound of extraordinary medicinal properties.
Curcumin shows cholagogic (it increases the secretion of bile, improves its flow in the bile ducts and regulates myocardial contractility of the gallbladder), relaxant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.
The supplements containing curcumin are recommended i.a. in bile duct inflammations, digestive system disorders, liver failure and gallstones.
