Jarrow Formulas Curcumin 95 is a dietary supplement containing curcuma extract standardized for the content of min. 95% of curcuminoids. It is a natural product of plant origin with a wide spectrum of biological activities, which has anticancer, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties and also supports the functioning of bile ducts and liver.

The preparation is recommended to all people with the aim of general health prophylaxis and also as therapy supplementation in the case of the disorders of the digestive system, circulatory system or lower immunity. Curcuma is a substance of plant origin, which is obtained from rhizomes of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.), called curcuma or Indian saffron. Curcuma rhizome is commonly used in Asian cuisine as a seasoning providing taste, smell and characteristic yellow color, however, its pro-health properties makes curcumin application exceed solely culinary goals.

Curcumin is the main bioactive compound in curcuma. This substance has multidirectional properties and positively influences the whole organism. It is attributed among others anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antioxidant and antibacterial properties. Moreover, this substance is used in order to mitigate the symptoms of diabetes, asthma, arthritis, neurodegenerative diseases or atherosclerosis.

Effective protection against free oxygen radicals
Stress, inappropriate lifestyle and bad eating habits are one of the main causes of oxidative stress, which may lead to many diseases (i.a. diabetes, atherosclerosis, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease) or deteriorate their course. Oxidative stress is the state which consists in disrupting the balance between generating reactive oxygen forms and antioxidant abilities of the organism.

Curcumin has high antioxidant potential. It effectively neutralizes the excess of free radicals and removes O2-– and H2O2, thanks to which it protects against oxidative damages of proteins and lipids, which positively influences cardiovascular system and plays a significant role in atherosclerosis prevention as well as it lowers the risk of developing the remaining diseases which are caused by oxidative stress. Moreover, curcumin increases glutathione synthesis – one of the strongest antioxidants occurring in the organism, which additionally escalates its effects.

Chemopreventive properties of curcumin
Curcumin positively influences many proteins, i.a. enzymes, cytokines, transcription factors, growth factors. Curcumin inhibits many signaling pathways and molecular targets, which are responsible for the development of inflammations and cancer. This compound limits the development of cancer at the stage of initiation and cancer cell proliferation, it facilitates carcinogen detoxification and lowers the risk of metastases. It may also strengthen the effect of certain anticancer medicines.

Support for the proper work of bile ducts and liver
Curcumin has spasmolytic properties by which it influences smooth muscles of bile ducts and stimulates the production and secretion of bile and facilitates its flow. This mechanism supports proper contractibility of gallbladder, counteracts bile retention and protects against the appearance of gall stones and moreover it may facilitate dissolving them. What is more, curcumin increases the secretion of stomach and pancreatic juices and protects the liver from the activity of toxic substances. These properties cause that the product finds its application among others in the case of liver failure, liver inflammation, disorders of bile secretion, gallstone and in the case of disorders in secreting digestive juices.

Anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin
