Hawthorn Berry 540mg Hawthorn Berry 540mg

Now Foods Hawthorn Berry is a product containing a hawthorn extract (Crataegus oxyacantha) in capsules. The plant has been considered as a remarkably valuable pharmaceutical material for ages, as it has many applications in treating various ailments. Scientific studies confirm its antioxidant, hypocholesterolaemic, hypolipidemic, and antiarthritic properties.

Hawthorn is a commonly known plant that has been long in use in supporting the treatment and prevention of various ailments. In western culture, it is considered as one of the oldest plants with pharmacological properties that has its monograph in various pharmacopoeias (English, German, French).

The main applications of hawthorn in traditional medicine are: diarrhoea, insomnia, diseases of the gallbladder, the digestive system, and the circulatory system, including arterial hypertension and distorted lipid metabolism. It has also been used as an antispasmodic agent in treating asthma and against digestion problems. Recent test results prove the wide range of healthy properties of hawthorn berries and flowers. The properties include above all the cardioprotective, antimicrobial, immunomodulatory and antioxidant effects.

Hawthorn is rich in many substances characterised by high biological activity. Its main components that are active in the organism are flavonoids and their “cousins”, proanthocyanidins (rutin, hyperoside, and rhamnoside). The leaves of the plant contain catechin and epicatechin. Moreover, hawthorn also contains saponins, tannins, anthocyanidins and proanthocyanidins, amines, choline, acetylcholine, purine derivatives (adenosine, adenine, guanine), caffeic acid, pectins, triterpene acids, as well as a large amount of vitamin C.

Many studies confirm the beneficial effect of hawthorn on the cardiovascular system. Experiments provide evidence suggesting its hypolipemic effect – the reduction of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, and an increase in HDL cholesterol levels. Hawthorn extracts are thought to be able to stimulate cholesterol metabolism to bile acids, thus helping to dispose of its excess from the organism. It also seems that hawthorn extracts can exhibit antiaggregant properties that can play an important role in preventing many pathological changes in blood vessels, which are a risk factor of, for example, a stroke or acute coronary syndromes.

The effect of hawthorn on the immune system has been a subject of many scientific studies. According to the literature, hawthorn exhibits an anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting the formation and release of inflammatory promoters, such as: histamine, leukotrienes, prostaglandins and serine proteases.

Hawthorn exhibits antimicrobial properties. Its extracts are characterised by the ability to fight the following strains: Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pyogenes, Micrococcus flavus, Bacillus subtilis, Lysteria monocytogenes, and Shigella flexener. Moreover, they are also believed to have antifungal properties, especially against: Trichophyton longifusus, Aspergillus flavus, Microspoum canis, and Fusarium Solani.

Free oxygen radicals are normal by-products of metabolism that can damage tissues if their excess is not scavenged by antioxidants. Antioxidants eliminate the activity of reactive oxygen species, which can help to prevent some diseases of affluence and has a beneficial effect on the organism’s overall condition. Hawthorn is rich in many compounds characterised by high antioxidant potential. Those are mainly polyphenols: flavonols, phenolic acids, procyanidins, anthocyanines and lignans.

To sum up, Now Foods Hawthorn Berry is a dietary supplement that can be successfully used for preventing circulatory system diseases, and as a fantastic complement to a healthy diet and physical activity in a healthy lifestyle. In terms of sports supplements, hawthorn is used to fight hypertension and to reduce an increased level of the sympathetic system arousal in people who excessively use stimulants or pharmacological support.
