Baikal skullcap (Scutellaria baicalensis), also known as Chinese Skullcap or Baikal Scullcap, is one of the most important raw materials with therapeutic purposes which belongs to the genus Scutellaria L. with a wide range of health benefits. Plants from this genus have been used for ages in traditional American, Asian and European medicine and baikal skullcap is the best known species.

Its biological activity is mainly due to flavonoids, such as baicalein, baicalin and wogonin, which are found in its roots. Since the content of beneficial ingredients increases with age of the plant, roots are harvested only after 4 years.

The plant has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-free radical, hepatoprotective and antiviral properties. In addition, it may prove helpful in chronic fatigue syndrome, exposure to stress, periodontal diseases, skin inflammation and vaginal irritation.

Because of its wide spectrum of theraputic effects, skullcap is an ingredient of herbal blends recommended, among others, to improve the function of the liver and bile duct, the body’s detoxification, recovery and relaxation and help fall asleep.
