Sarsaparilla, called also Smilax ornata, is a plant of the Smilacaceae family. It is often said that it has the ability to mimic the activity of some hormones, including testosterone. Because of that, Sarsparilla is used readily by men who want to stay in shape. However, compounds from this plant, which are commonly believed to have an anabolic effect, do not show such properties.

Sarsparilla has a beneficial impact on skin quality and reduces some dermatological problems (acne and psoriasis). Furthermore,  Sarsaparilla has a protective effect on hepatocytes, promotes the body’s detoxification, improves digestion and exerts anti-inflammatory, analgesic and oedema-reducing properties.

Supplementation with this plant, specifically its root, is therefore recommended for general fatigue, weakened immunity and poor skin quality and to improve liver function and cleansing of the body.
