Vitamin B6 (or pyridoxine) – actually, under this name occur six different compounds which are mutually transformed. It mostly affects nervous and endocrine systems. The results of its deficiency are so serious that it is worth ensuring its proper supplementation.

The consequence of a too low level of vitamin B6 can be changes in the nervous system whose symptoms are depression, mood lowering or insomnia. Due to its beneficial effects in improving cognitive skills, it is especially recommended for students and mental workers, as it has a positive influence on thinking processes and memory.

Vitamin B6 helps to prevent cardiovascular diseases, as it has an ability to reduce homocysteine levels (which is one of the major risk factors of heart diseases). What is more, it also improves the immunity of the body system and plays an important role in generation of antibodies. The vitamin also participates in the blood forming processes – it is especially important in the production of red blood cells.

Furthermore, its unique pain-killing properties are worth mentioning. It is very effective in removing various types of contractions and pain of neural origins. It is also a great pain-killing agent which is used even in the anticancer therapy.

The main factors that lead to vitamin B6 deficiency are fatigue, stress, physical and psychical effort. Moreover, weight-loss diets and hormonal contraception lower the level of the vitamin. The need for pyridoxine increase when consuming protein-rich food. That is why especially athletes and people who follow high-protein diets should pay great attention to it.

Vitamin B6 significantly increases the absorption of magnesium, facilitates its transport to the cells and protects its intracellular deposits. That is why people who take magnesium preparations should also supplement pyridoxine.
