Most people like sweet taste and perceive it as being attractive. Some of them can not imagine coffee or tea with a few spoons of sugar, others prefer sweet cakes, an ice cream or a cake. There would be nothing wrong if the intake of sugars was responsible for many problems, especially health.

Sugars, otherwise carbohydrates – are simple and complex. The simplest sugar (a monosaccharide) is glucose, a disaccharide example – sucrose, the most popular double-sugar in the world. There are also polysaccharides. The sucrose is a cane sugar being used since ancient times, since 1747 it is also obtained from sugar beets in sugar factories.

Why sugar can be 'bad'? Firstly, sugar is calories. One gram of table sugar is approx. 4 kcal (3.87 kcal in the case of a human consumption). It seems that it is not much, but 3 teaspoons of coffee is already 40. But calories alone are not enough. Eaten sugars cause standard, physiological response from a pancreas. Followed by the ejection of insulin – a hormone responsible for metabolism and absorption of sugars. Its ejection is proportional to the amount of sugar and glycemic index IG. In the case of sugars used to sweeten, the ratio is usually high.

Excessive and regularly appearing a large burst of insulin can lead to insulin resistance, problems with the assimilation of sugars, or even diabetes. Most of mono- and oligosaccharides gives a large energetic peak, and when released energy is not consumed, it replenishes fat – it can lead to an addiction of sugar. Apart from the body as a whole, it is also worth to draw attention to teeth – sugar is na enemy, causing dental caries.
