S-Adenosyl methionine (SAMe) – a compound synthesised in the human body from adenosine and methionine. It is involved in the methylation process as a donor of methyl groups (even though the efficiency of methylation depends also from its synthesis). SAMe supplementation is also used mainly because of its beneficial impact on emotional states and mind. A decrease in S-adenosyl methionine levels is observed in patients with depression. Some sources indicate the efficacy of this compound in situations when serotonin reuptake inhibitors, the most popular medicines for mental disorders, are not sufficiently effective.
In addition, SAMe supplementation influences beneficially the body’s levels of glutathione, a potent antioxidant mechanism. It is thus an effective way to reduce oxidative stress. It shows also a beneficial impact on liver function and is recommended to promote the treatment of chronic diseases of this organ.
What is more, this compound is suggested to help treat joint inflammation. Certain sources report that SAMe is therefore as effective as non-steroid anti-inflammatory medicines.
