Cortisol is a steroid hormone produced in the adrenal cortex. Its main task is to increase glucose levels in the bloodstream in stressful situations (physical effort, mental stress), when the demand for it increases. It also has strong anti-inflammatory properties.
Athletes hate this hormone. In the long run, the effects of its actions are highly undesirable. Because cortisol is a catabolic hormone it burns even our hard-earned muscle to obtain glucose. Stress does not need to be the stimulus for such an action, but for example strength training, exam or starvation during diet. Cortisol affects also the fat storage in the places from which it is difficult to get rid of it, for example on our face, around the internal organs or around waist. Is it inevitable? We don't think so, and this category is a result of such opinion. You will find there both herbal and synthetic anti-cortisol products. However, if you think or suspect that you have a serious cortisol problem you probably should ask your endocrinologist.
