Collagen - is the fundamental building block of connective tissue. Tissue-forming collagen proteins are made of four amino acids: glycine, proline, as well as hydroxyproline and hydroxylysine, which are formed from proline and lysine through an enzymatic process that requires the presence of vitamin C. As the main component of tendons, it gives them high tensile strength, while in the skin it is responsible for its elasticity, smoothness and firmness - it is the loss of collagen that causes wrinkles.
Type I collagen is the most abundant protein in the body and the main component of the skin, to which it gives elasticity, firmness and tensile strength.
Type III collagen, on the other hand, is commonly found in the tissues of the cardiovascular system and is involved in the wound healing process. Lack of this type of collagen causes stiffness of the arteries, which contributes to cardiovascular diseases including atherosclerosis.
