DOCTOR'S BEST MSM with OptiMSM is a dietary supplement containing a source of organic sulfur, i.e. MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) at 1.5 grams per capsule.

Methylsulfonylmethane (dimethyl sulfone, better known as MSM) - an organic sulfur compound derived from lignin; an oxidized form of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) used in supplementation for its specific antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Contributes to the maintenance of normal joint health (slightly different in its effects from glucosamine sulfate). It occurs naturally in some green vegetables and other foods, but the amounts are insufficient for therapeutic effects.

After oral administration, MSM is detectable in serum and appears to have a very long half-life - it can be detected in serum up to two days after an adequate dose. In addition, it has the ability to bioaccumulate in all tissues tested.

MSM / sulfur deficiencies
MSM replenishes systemic sulfur deficiencies, including thiol -SH groups necessary for glutathione and antioxidant enzymes, and can contribute to increased collagen synthesis. It shows synergistic effects in this regard when combined with cysteine, methionine, N-acetylcysteine (NAC), glucosamine sulfate and other donors of sulfur or sulfur groups.

MSM / applications in practice
With MSM supplementation, a decrease in exercise-induced oxidation is noted and is believed to be responsible for a reduction in muscle damage and pain. MSM lowers the parameters of oxidative biomarkers and exercise-induced lipid peroxidation, suppresses symptoms of osteoarthritis, reduces post-workout muscle pain, and reduces allergic reactions to pollen. It also works well as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory.

MSM / joint health
Sulfur is an important component of human joint cartilage. Providing it to people on a diet low in this element is intended to protect cartilage, which is essential for keeping joints in good shape. It is possible that this is why glucosamine appears to be more effective in its sulfate form compared to its other form (hydrochloride).

Although sulfur (in the sulfate form) is used as a stimulator for the production of proteoglycans, which help retain water in the matrix of cartilage tissue (synovium), the aforementioned situation can only occur if sulfur deficiencies are supplemented.

MSM / allergic conditions
In one scientific experiment conducted on a group of 55 hay fever sufferers who were treated with MSM supplementation at a dose of 2,600 mg for one month in an open trial, an alleviation of allergy symptoms and breathing problems was observed in the first 7 days, and a further reduction of these problems in the following days.

Studies have shown a reduction in these allergic symptoms of about 20-40%.

MSM/exercise and injuries
MSM administered at a dose of 3,000 mg daily for 30 days to moderately active men is able to reducedelayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) by 1.5 points on a 5-point Likert scale. This was measured 48 hours after exercise. A dose of 1,500 mg proved less effective (0.5 points). The above situation may be related to the antioxidant properties of MSM, which leads to a reduction in muscle damage, lipid peroxidation and protein carbonylation.

MSM / connective tissue degeneration
One systematic review was able to report two studies establishing a relationship between MSM and osteoarthritis, including a trial involving the daily intake of 1,500 mg of MSM (alone or in combination with 1,500 mg of glucosamine) for 12 weeks. Significant reductions in pain were observed in all treatment groups compared to the placebo group.

Another trial with a higher dose of MSM (2g per day for 2 weeks, followed by 6g for another 10 weeks) confirmed the effect of MSM in reducing joint pain, and a 12-week supplementation of 3,375g of MSM in knee osteoarthritis sufferers resulted in 20% resolution of symptoms and 21% less pain, compared to a 9% increase in those taking a placebo.

How to take MSM?
MSM supplementation should be taken at a dose of 3,000 mg per day. This dose seems to be effective in eliminating osteoarthritis symptoms, and also provides the body with antioxidant protection. It is not fully confirmed whether a dose higher than 3,000 mg would be better. Therefore, it is recommended to stay at this dose.
