Noctua NoctaBicarb is a dietary supplement for healthy adults with increased physical activity providing sodium bicarbonate in delayed-release capsules.

Why do athletes need sodium bicarbonate?

You may know sodium bicarbonate from... the kitchen! It is a white, alkaline powder commonly known as baking soda. It is usually used in baked goods to help them rise. However, bicarbonate also has a second face - it can be used in supplementation for athletes. Interestingly, the evidence for its effectiveness is rated as very strong.

Among others, it is reported by the Australian Institute of Sport, a highly reputable institution in sports science circles. This institute monitors scientific reports on supplementation for athletes and, based on them, classifies supplements into 4 groups: A, B, C and D. AIS has classified sodium bicarbonate in Group A, accompanied by such stars as creatine, beta-alanine and caffeine. Group A signifies the highest quality of evidence of effectiveness.

Sodium bicarbonate is naturally produced by the body, which uses it to maintain acid-base balance¹. This naturally produced bicarbonate in the body is an integral component of the body's basic pH buffering system¹.

Noctua's dietary supplement NoctaBicarb is designed to facilitate an increase in sodium bicarbonate stores that an intensively trained body could use.

What types of training and activity can be preceded by sodium bicarbonate supplementation?

- High-intensity competitions (1-7 min) in which lactic acid accumulation begins to cause fatigue, such as rowing, swimming, middle-distance running
- High-intensity competitions lasting up to an hour, in which a surge or sprint to the finish line may be required to determine the winner
- Sports that require prolonged, repeated, intense rounds, such as team sports or combat sports
- Workouts with characteristics similar to the above activities, practiced to adapt the body for competition or competition

Delayed-release capsules

Those who have tried supplementation with baking soda powder alone know that it is not the most pleasant experience, and the use of capsules is perfectly legitimate. In the case of this product, delayed-release capsules were used so that the bicarbonate goes directly into the intestines without neutralizing the acidic environment of the stomach along the way. Sodium bicarbonate in an enteral capsule is the optimal way to deliver this substance to the body, without discomfort or unnecessary changes in the stomach.

Despite the rather large number of capsules to be consumed at one time, this is the most pleasant and effective form of taking sodium bicarbonate.

Protocols for using sodium bicarbonate for athletes

The recommended serving of this supplement is 8 capsules taken about an hour before training. This serving size ensures that the lower threshold of recommended amounts of sodium bicarbonate is exceeded for most people who train.

The above recommendation is an average, but regarding sodium bicarbonate supplementation, more specific protocols have been developed that involve adjusting the serving size of bicarbonate to the athlete's body weight:
- 100 mg per kg of body weight is considered the threshold amount for sports supplementation
- 200-300 mg per kg of body weight is considered the optimum, judging from research results1

Using NoctaBicarb capsules to cover the above recommendations, one would:
- use 1 NoctaBicarb capsule for every 12 kg of body weight to reach the threshold of 100 mg of sodium bicarbonate per kg of body weight
- use 1 capsule of NoctaBicarb for every 6 kg of body weight to reach a threshold of 200 mg of sodium bicarbonate per kg of body weight
- use 1 capsule of NoctaBicarb for every 4 kg of body weight to reach a threshold of 300 mg of sodium bicarbonate per kg of body weight

Increasing portions of NoctaBicarb beyond the recommended daily allowance is recommended to consult a doctor or nutritionist.

In addition to calculating the portion of bicarbonate to take before training, it is recommended to simultaneously drink an adequate amount of fluids (10 ml for each kg of body weight) and consume a small but carbohydrate-rich meal (recommended to provide 1.5 g of carbohydrates for each kg of body weight).

In summary, Noctua NoctaBicarb is a dietary supplement for athletes that allows you to conveniently and safely deliver sodium bicarbonate to your body. The delayed-release capsules make pre-workout supplementation convenient and well-tolerated.
