Swanson D-Chiro-Inositol is a dietary supplement containing a patented Chirositol®complex, extracted from the carob tree, which includes inositol in the form of D-chiro-inositol (DCI) and manganese. One serving contains 85 g of DCI. The formula supports restoration of hormonal balance and normal sugar metabolism.

D-chiro-inositol is one of the biologically active forms of inositol A common form of inositol is also myo-inositol, the main source of which is the diet. In the body, myo-inositol can be converted to DCI to some extent. The ratio of myo-inositol to DCI varies from tissue to tissue. Epimerization of myo-inositol to DCI occurs primarily in insulin-sensitive tissues, including muscle. It is observed that in patients with type 2 diabetes and women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), the efficiency of this conversion is greatly reduced.

Inositol is a glucose derivative, once classified as a B vitamin, and now considered a vitamin-like compound. The main biochemical function of this compound is to enable the synthesis of inositol triphosphate (IP3), a secondary signaling molecule that enables (through its effect on calcium ions) the transmission of signals within the cell in response to the activation of specific cell receptors. In this way, inositol participates in insulin signaling, among other things.

Hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance are conditions that have adverse health consequences. They contribute to central obesity (insulin is the most potent anabolic hormone), dyslipidemia, inflammation and endocrine disruption. In women, the development of polycystic ovary syndrome is associated with insulin disorders. In men, on the other hand, increased activity of aromatase - the enzyme that converts androgens to estrogens - is observed, resulting in lower testosterone levels.

Inositol improves tissue sensitivity to insulin. As an intracellular transmitter of insulin signaling, inositol contributes to reducing insulin resistance, increasing the sensitivity of tissue receptors to insulin, and improving glucose tolerance. In addition, there are many publications indicating that patients with type 2 diabetes, a type of diabetes associated with insulin resistance, have reduced levels of D-chiro-inositol.

Inositol is helpful in PCOS and fertility disorders. Insulin resistance is closely associated with PCOS - OI occurs in about 80% of patients with PCOS and obesity, and in about 40% of patients with PCOS and normal weight. Hyperinsulinemia increases the production of androgens in the ovaries, resulting in hyperandrogenism (including hirsutism, acne) and lack of ovulation. It has been shown that one of the causes of OI in hyperinsulinemia may be a disturbance in secondary cell signaling, caused by abnormal inositol metabolism. Inositol is also helpful in restoring regular menstrual cycles, the disruption of which is observed in PCOS.

Inositol benefits cardiovascular health. Inositol may reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, including atherosclerosis. It exhibits lipotropic activity. It affects lipid metabolism, preventing lipids from accumulating in arterial walls and organs, especially in the liver, protecting it from steatosis. Inositol can also lower blood cholesterol levels.

Manganese is an element classified as a micronutrient. In the body, it primarily functions as a component or activator of many enzymes. Manganese supports the carbohydrate normalizing effects of inositol. Manganese deficiencies have been shown to be common in people with carbohydrate and fat metabolism disorders

Manganese supports musculoskeletal health. In animal studies, manganese deficiencies were shown to adversely affect bone and connective tissue - reduced production of chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronic acid, among others, was observed. In addition, low concentrations of this element are noted in people suffering from osteoporosis.

In summary, Swanson D-Chiro-Inositol is a dietary supplement recommended for restoring hormonal and carbohydrate balance, aiding in insulin resistance, PCOS, fertility support, stress and emotional overload.
