Coconut (Cocos Nucifera L.) is a member of the family Arecaceae (palm family), which commonly grows in the tropics in Polynesia and Asia. One of the coconut derivatives, which enjoys lately a big popularity, is the coconut oil. Although, it is becoming lately even more famous, it has been known and used for ages in medicine, cosmetics and gastronomy.

Coconut oil affects more effective adipose tissue combustion, reduces appetite and regulates metabolism. It has antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties. Moreover, it improves heart functions and strengthens the immune system. It can be used every day for cosmetic purposes. It also has nourishing and moisturizing properties, accelerates wound healing, moisturizes and smoothes skin as well as strengthens and nourishes skin.

The composition of coconut oil
The main components of coconut oil are saturated fatty acids (more than 90%). There are mainly myristic acids (17%) and palmitic acids (9%). Coconut oil is also known for big content of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA), which include mainly lauric acid (46%), capric acid, caprylic acid and caproic acid. This raw material contains also small quantities of unsaturated fatty acids (6.5% of oleic acid and about 1.5% of linoleic acid). Moreover, coconut oil contains also vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B6, C, E and folic acid) and minerals (iron, phosphorous and zinc).

MCFA, medium-chain fatty acids, are compounds that contain 6–12 molecules of carbon in their chains. MCT fats (medium-chain triglycerides) undergo the process of hydrolysis more easily, do not require the presence of pancreatic lipase and are digested much faster than long-chain fatty acids, and at the same time they save energy during the digestion.

MCFA are quickly transported with blood to the liver via the portal vein. In the hepatocytes mitochondria, the fast beta-oxidation of MCT takes place, whose result is a release of large amounts of energy, which does not causes the accumulation of adipose tissue. The energy created in these reactions is used by the body system for other processes (e.g. protein synthesis or catabolism of triacylglycerols of long-chain fatty acids).

Coconut oil and the cardiovascular system
The regular consumption of coconut oil may positively affects the condition of the cardiovascular system. According to the research, coconut oil, and more specifically its component, caprylic acid, has supporting effects in case of hypertension, strengthens arteries, reduces the tension of blood vessels and increases their flexibility. Moreover, it shows antioxidant properties, which is related to the presence of polyphenols.

The scientific research has demonstrated that coconut oil may be useful in optimization of lipid profile. It has been observed that this raw material can increase the concentration of HDL cholesterol and reduce the concentration of LDL cholesterol, VLDL and triglycerides. What is more, it has been also demonstrated that coconut oil does not affect the increase in homocysteine, an amino acid whose excess is one of the risk factors of atherosclerosis.

Protective properties of the coconut fat
Coconut oil strengthens the body system, improves immunity and reduces susceptibility to infections. It shows anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antifungal properties. According to numerous scientific studies, coconut oil supports the fight against pathogenic microorganisms.

Lauric acid alleviates inflammations caused by Propionibacterium acnes, a bacterium responsible for acne, which is why it can supports treating this condition. Moreover, it inhibits the growth of different species from S. aureus and S. epidermidis, which belong to Staphylococcus that often colonise the skin, as well as it has antibacterial influence on S. salivarius, S mutans, S. mitis and L. acidophilus, which populate the mouth, and antifungal influence on C. albicans, C. tropicalis and A. niger.

Coconut oil and weight reduction
The consumption of coconut oil may promote weight loss. As already mentioned, medium-chain fatty acids contained in coconut oil are not accumulated in form of adipose tissue, because they are transformed into energy. Moreover, they can accelerate metabolism, which is why they support the reduction of excessive adipose tissue and reduce catabolism of muscle tissue.

Cosmetic properties of the coconut oil
Coconut oil applied externally strengthens the protective barrier of skin, moisturizes and alleviates inflammations as well as improves wound healing.
