Studies carried out on people confirm slimming effect of capsaicin. During its regular application, the change of protein concentrations related to thermogenesis and fat metabolism takes place. It slows down gene transcription of proteins, which stimulate the accumulation of extra fatty tissue and stimulates gene transcription of proteins related to thermogenesis. Moreover, it increases generation of heat by intensifying the secretion of adrenaline and noradrenaline. It also influences transcription of genes responsible for the production of enzymes catalyzing reactions of fat reduction. Apart from this, capsaicin reduces appetite. All these properties contribute to facilitating fatty tissue reduction and weight loss.

Antioxidant properties
Antioxidant effect of capsaicin mainly consists in inhibiting oxidation. An example may be slowing down oxidation of LDL lipoproteins, which is reflected in reducing the development of atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease and myocardial infarction. Lower risk of developing neurodegenerative Alzheimer’s disease was also proven among Indian population, who are known for eating food rich in hot spices, which may constitute one of the causes of this phenomenon.

Antimicrobial effect

Inhibiting influence of the alkaloid on the development of various species of bacteria was proven, such as Salmonella typhimurium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The mechanisms of antibacterial effect of capsaicin are among others: causing osmotic stress, destruction of cell membrane structure or inhibiting gene expression responsible for cell growth.

Reduction of blood pressure

Available sources report that capsaicin has a potential limiting the development of cancers of: lungs, colon, prostate, glioma and melanoma. Possible mechanisms of anticancer effects of capsaicin are: causing apoptosis and destroying mitochondria of cancer cells as well as limiting angiogenesis. Angiogenesis is a process of forming new blood vessels and an important stage in the growth of tumor and metastases.

Information

Cayenne pepper - derived from hot peppers chilli, is not only the kitchen spice, but also a component of supplements. It contains capsaicin (an alkaloid which affects the vanilloid receptor, causing the feeling of warming). The increase in temperature causes the release of adrenaline and noradrenaline (catecholamines) from the adrenal medulla, and the consequent increase of metabolism and intensity of the lipolysis (resulting in reduction of adipose tissue) and is applicable in slimming diets (especially for people with low physical activity).
