Selaginella Tamariscina is a small plant from the Selaginellaceae family, naturally growing in the tropical and temperate climate, grown in many countries around the world. The shoots and leaves of the plant are a valuable healing raw material, used very often in traditional Chinese medicine. Scientists have distinguished a number of bioactive components from them, out of which the most valuable seems to be – rarely found in nature – amentoflavone.
In supplementation, extracts from Selaginella Tamariscina are most commonly standardized to a minimum of 20% of amentoflavone. It has been proven that the compound promotes increased strength and endurance, promotes fat burning and improves insulin sensitivity. It acts as an inhibitor of phosphodiesterase, causing increased levels of cAMP. In addition, it limits the activity of protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B, which determines insulin signaling. It can also inhibit the activity of acetylcholinesterase, which results in an increase in acetylcholine concentration and improves memory and concentration.
Extracts from Selaginella Tamariscina are often used in sports supplementation. They are usually included in fat burners and pre-workout preparations. They are available in the form of mono-preparations or in combination with other substances.
